Have you ever washed virtual mahjong tiles?

For the past 4 years, the Youth Collaborative for Chinatown has hosted summer “Hot + Noisy” mahjong events to bring the Vancouver Chinatown community together. I have had the pleasure of volunteering and witnessing how these events facilitate intergenerational learning and reclamation of space. (Poster designed in collaboration with Vanessa Grondin).
With public health concerns impacting in-person events, I was inspired to consider how to recreate both the game and the cultural practice in virtual environments, starting with a prototype developed in Scratch, and then Unity.
